Iowa › Doc fee
Iowa doc fee cap: $180.00 and what it covers
What Iowa allows
- Iowa caps the documentary fee at $180.00. A dealer cannot charge more than that, and a figure above it is a billing error rather than a negotiating position.
- The rule: Iowa Code 322.19A(2): $180 per vehicle sold in a transaction; fixed, not CPI-indexed. 322.19A(3): the fee must be in the price and in any advertised price..
Is it taxed, and is it negotiable?
- The doc fee is NOT taxed in Iowa — you pay the fee, but no tax on top of it.
- Because the cap is a legal ceiling rather than a required charge, a dealer is free to charge less. It is a smaller lever than the vehicle price, but it is not fixed by law at the maximum.
What's specific to Iowa
- The 5% is figured on the price of the car, freight and dealer-installed accessories included. The doc fee is not part of it. An optional service contract or vehicle protection package is left out if it is listed separately on the contract.
- The doc fee is capped at $180 per vehicle. The cap is a fixed dollar amount and does not rise with inflation. Iowa law requires a dealer that charges it to include it in the price of the car and to state its full amount in any advertised price.

Common questions
How much is the doc fee in Iowa?
Capped at $180.00 by law.
Can I refuse to pay the Iowa doc fee?
Generally no — dealers charge it on every deal and will not remove the line. What you can do is negotiate the total out-the-door price, which is what actually determines your cost.
