Louisiana › Doc fee
Louisiana doc fee cap: $436.00 and what it covers
What Louisiana allows
- Louisiana caps the documentary fee at $436.00. A dealer cannot charge more than that, and a figure above it is a billing error rather than a negotiating position.
- The cap is inflation-indexed, so it moves on a schedule rather than staying fixed. The figure above is the one currently in force.
- The rule: La. R.S. 6:969.18(A)(2): capped at $436 for 2026 (CPI-U or 3%, whichever is less); LMVC bulletin B-2026-001..
Is it taxed, and is it negotiable?
- The doc fee is part of the taxable amount in Louisiana, so sales tax is calculated on it as well. A larger doc fee costs you more than the fee itself.
- Because the cap is a legal ceiling rather than a required charge, a dealer is free to charge less. It is a smaller lever than the vehicle price, but it is not fixed by law at the maximum.
- Taxed at Louisiana's 5% to 12%, a $436.00 doc fee really costs between $457.80 and $488.32.
What's specific to Louisiana
- The doc fee is capped at $436 for 2026 (the base is $425; it adjusts every January for inflation, at most 3% a year). The dealer has to give you a written notice that it is not a mandatory state fee. Louisiana taxes charges a seller adds to make the sale even when they are billed separately, and no rule exempts the doc fee, so the calculator taxes it. The Department of Revenue has not ruled on the doc fee itself.

Common questions
How much is the doc fee in Louisiana?
Capped at $436.00 by law.
Can I refuse to pay the Louisiana doc fee?
Generally no — dealers charge it on every deal and will not remove the line. What you can do is negotiate the total out-the-door price, which is what actually determines your cost.
