Nebraska car sales tax: rate, sourcing and what it applies to
How the Nebraska rate is set
- Nebraska's rate is not a single statewide number — it is resolved from the ZIP code you register in, because local jurisdictions add to the state rate. Across Nebraska the combined rate runs 5.5% to 7.5%, so where you register genuinely changes what you owe.
- The rate that matters is the one where you register the vehicle, not where the dealership sits. Buying out of your area does not change what you owe.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: the dealer doc fee, dealer-installed accessories and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Nebraska
- Registering the car: in Nebraska you register at your county treasurer's office within 30 days. The dealer gives you a Form 6 that shows the sales tax, and an In Transit sticker that covers the car meanwhile. Some dealers can also handle the registration for you through the state's electronic dealer services system, but only if you choose it, for a fee of up to $50. The tax, title and registration are in this total because you pay them either way.
- The sales tax follows where the car is registered, not where the dealer is: 5.5% state tax plus your city's tax of 0.5% to 2% (1.75% in Lincoln). The county treasurer uses the street address on your registration; a PO box is not used. An address outside any city pays 5.5% (6% in Dakota County). Across Nebraska the total runs from 5.5% to 7.5%.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount, with no dollar cap, on a new or a used car. A manufacturer rebate reduces it only when it is applied to the price at the sale (assigned to the dealer and shown on the invoice). A rebate paid to you after the sale does not.
- The doc fee is taxed and Nebraska sets no cap on it. Service contracts, maintenance plans and GAP are also taxed, which is not true in most states, and so are dealer-installed accessories and freight.
- The motor vehicle tax is the large Nebraska cost the sticker price hides. It is set by the car's original MSRP and age, not by what you paid, and it recurs every year. Enter the MSRP so the figure is right; for a used car, enter the original MSRP if you know it.
- A city wheel tax adds to registration in some places. The calculator includes Lincoln's ($74) and an estimate for Omaha ($50). Other cities that charge one are not in the total.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in Nebraska?
It varies by where you register — the state rate plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for the exact combined rate.
Is the doc fee taxed in Nebraska?
Yes. The doc fee is added to the price before tax is calculated, so it costs you slightly more than its face value.
