Pennsylvania car sales tax: rate, sourcing and what it applies to
How the Pennsylvania rate is set
- Pennsylvania's rate is not a single statewide number — it is resolved from the ZIP code you register in, because local jurisdictions add to the state rate. Across Pennsylvania the combined rate runs 6% to 8%, so where you register genuinely changes what you owe.
- The rate that matters is the one where you register the vehicle, not where the dealership sits. Buying out of your area does not change what you owe.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: dealer-installed accessories and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Not part of the taxable amount: the dealer doc fee.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Pennsylvania
- Pennsylvania sales tax is based on the county you REGISTER the vehicle in (destination-based) — 6% statewide, plus 1% for Allegheny County and 2% for Philadelphia, even if you buy from a dealer elsewhere in the state.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount, with no dollar cap.
- Manufacturer rebates AND dealer cash discounts both reduce the taxable amount in Pennsylvania — unlike some states that tax the rebate.
- The dealer's documentary fee is NOT subject to sales tax in Pennsylvania, and is capped: $490 max if filed electronically, $409 max if filed on paper (CPI-adjusted yearly).
- Extended warranties and other F&I products ARE taxable in Pennsylvania.
- Some counties add an optional $5/yr 'Fee for Local Use' at registration — not included here since it doesn't apply statewide; check with your county if you're unsure.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in Pennsylvania?
It varies by where you register — the state rate plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for the exact combined rate.
Is the doc fee taxed in Pennsylvania?
No. Pennsylvania excludes the doc fee from the taxable amount, so you pay the fee but not tax on it.
