South Dakota car sales tax: 4% and what it applies to
How the South Dakota rate is set
- South Dakota charges 4%, and that rate is the same everywhere in the state — no county or city adds to it on a vehicle purchase.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: the dealer doc fee, dealer-installed accessories and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to South Dakota
- South Dakota charges no sales tax on a car. It charges a 4% motor vehicle excise tax on the purchase price, the same everywhere in the state. No city or county adds to it. Your county treasurer collects it when you title the car. The dealer is not required to, though a dealer can file the paperwork for you.
- The tax follows the county where you live, not where the dealer is. You have 45 days to title the car. Interest starts after 45 days and a 10% penalty after 60.
- A manufacturer rebate does not lower the tax: South Dakota counts cash rebates as part of what you paid. A dealer discount does lower it. The rebate still reduces what you pay out of pocket.
- The doc fee is taxed at 4% when it is part of the sale price. South Dakota does not cap it. Service contracts sold with the car are taxed too. GAP sold as insurance and credit insurance are not; GAP sold as a debt cancellation waiver is taxed.
- Registration is by weight and age, billed from the purchase date to a renewal month set by the first letter of your last name. The registration and county wheel tax amounts here are one-year estimates at the 2,001 to 4,000 lb rate; your first bill may be shorter or longer. The county treasurer quotes the exact amount, and the state's 605Drive site gives an estimate from your documents.
- If you bought in another state, South Dakota credits the tax you paid there against its 4%. You pay only the difference, with proof of the tax paid. This calculator does not cover that case.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in South Dakota?
4%, statewide, with no local add-on for vehicles.
Is the doc fee taxed in South Dakota?
Yes. The doc fee is added to the price before tax is calculated, so it costs you slightly more than its face value.
