Utah car registration and title fees
What the dealer collects in Utah
- Title fee — $6.00. Certificate of title, paid when the car is titled in your name. The dealer files the application with the DMV, normally within 45 days. The DMV's fee summary lists no separate charge for recording a lien on a new title. (Utah Code 41-1a-1210; DMV Summary of Common Fees)
- State registration fees — $72.50. One year of registration for a car or light truck of 14,000 pounds or less. The Tax Commission's dealer schedule puts the total at $72.50 for permits issued from April 1, 2026: a registration fee ($58.25) and an added fee ($7.50), both indexed to inflation every January 1, plus $2.50 driver education, $1 uninsured motorist and the DMV's electronic payment fee. Registration does not carry over from the seller, so a used car pays it too. (Utah Code 41-1a-1206(1)(b), (3); 41-1a-1204; 41-1a-1218; 41-1a-1221; Tax Commission MVED Temporary Permit Fees 2026 (eff. 2026-04-01))
- Age-based uniform fee (in place of property tax) — varies. Utah's substitute for the yearly property tax on a car, set by the car's age: $150 for the first three model years (2024 to 2026 models in 2026), then $110, $80, $50, and $10 at 12 years or older. Due at each registration and renewal, once a calendar year, with no proration. (Utah Code 59-2-405.1(3)(a); DMV Uniform Fees, 2026 age-based fee tables)
- Electric vehicle fee (2026) — $180.00. A yearly flat fee in place of fuel tax, equal to the state's road usage charge cap: $180 in 2026. You can enroll in UDOT's per-mile program instead (1.25 cents a mile in 2026) and pay no more than the cap. (Utah Code 41-1a-1206(1)(g)(i); 72-1-213.1(12)(a))
- Electric vehicle fee (2027) — $280.00. A yearly flat fee in place of fuel tax, equal to the road usage charge cap, which rises to $280 on January 1, 2027. The per-mile alternative becomes 1.5 cents a mile. (Utah Code 41-1a-1206(1)(g)(i); 72-1-213.1(12)(b))
- Hybrid vehicle fee — $25.00. A yearly fee on a hybrid electric vehicle, on top of registration. The statute sets $21.75 and the Tax Commission indexes it each January 1. The Legislature's staff briefing lists $25 for 2026. (Utah Code 41-1a-1206(1)(g)(ii), (3)(b); Utah Legislature OLRGC briefing 'Vehicle Registration' (2026-09-16), Fig. 1)
- Plug-in hybrid fee — $64.00. A yearly fee on a plug-in hybrid, on top of registration. The statute sets $56.50 and the Tax Commission indexes it each January 1. The Legislature's staff briefing lists $64 for 2026. (Utah Code 41-1a-1206(1)(g)(iii), (3)(b); Utah Legislature OLRGC briefing 'Vehicle Registration' (2026-09-16), Fig. 1)
- License plate fee and postage — $14.75. A new plate set, mailed to you by the DMV. The Legislature sets the plate fee and postage by fee schedule, not in the statute. The DMV charges $18.75 for a replacement plate with decal, duplicate registration and postage; this takes out the $4 duplicate registration. Not charged if you move a plate from a car you own. (Utah Code 41-1a-1211(1), (8), 41-1a-1208; DMV Replace Plate page)
- Highway corridor preservation fee — $10.00. A county fee of $10 on each registration in Box Elder, Davis, Iron, Morgan, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah, Wasatch, Washington and Weber counties. Counties may set it up to $10. (Utah Code 41-1a-1222; DMV Registration Taxes & Fees)
- Air pollution control fee — $3.00. A county emissions-program fee of $3 on each registration in Salt Lake, Davis and Cache counties. Electric vehicles are exempt. (Utah Code 41-1a-1223; DMV Registration Taxes & Fees)
- Air pollution control fee — $2.00. A county emissions-program fee of $2 on each registration in Utah and Weber counties. Electric vehicles are exempt. (Utah Code 41-1a-1223; DMV Registration Taxes & Fees)
Other charges you may see at the sale
- Temporary permit (est.) — $6.00 (dealer fee). The 45-day permit the dealer issues so you can drive until the plates arrive. Utah lets a dealer charge a temporary permit fee on top of the negotiated price but sets no amount, and it is not a government charge. The DMV's own permit costs $6, which this uses. If the dealer passes it on, the FTC expects it in the advertised price. (Utah Code 41-3-211(3)(a); 41-3-302; DMV Sales Information FAQ; DMV Summary of Common Fees)
- Waste tire recycling fee — $1.00 per tire (government-mandated). $1 for each new tire sold with a new car, collected by the dealer with the sales tax and shown on its own line. Whether a spare counts is not confirmed. (Utah Code 19-6-805, 19-6-803(26); R865-19S-93; Tax Commission Waste Tire Recycling Fee page)
What comes later
- Registration renews every year, at the same state fee plus the age-based uniform fee. The uniform fee falls as the car ages: $150 in its first three model years, $110, $80, $50, then $10 at 12 years. Utah has no separate yearly property tax on a car.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
- An electric car pays a flat fee at each registration instead of fuel tax: $180 in 2026, $280 from January 1, 2027, or you can enroll in UDOT's per-mile road usage charge, capped at that amount. Electric cars can be registered for 24 months at double the fees.
- A hybrid or plug-in hybrid pays a yearly fee at registration on top of the state fee ($25 and $64 in 2026). The Tax Commission re-indexes both every January 1.
- Your county requires an emissions test to register this car: every two years while it is under six model years old (in the years that match the model year's odd or even number), every year after that. A car in its first two model years and an electric car are exempt. The test station sets its price, and the county's air pollution control fee is on your registration. A dealer has to have a used car tested before it can issue a temporary permit.
What's specific to Utah
- At the sale: the dealer normally collects the title, registration, age-based fee and plates, issues a 45-day temporary permit, and files the paperwork with the DMV within 45 days. You can register the car yourself instead. Then the dealer must give you the title within 48 hours and a report of sale showing the tax was collected.
- The age-based uniform fee is Utah's substitute for property tax on a car: $150 in the first three model years, then $110, $80, $50 and $10. Registration does not transfer from the seller, so a used car is registered again, and the fee charged again, in your name.
- State registration fees are indexed to inflation every January 1, and a $0.50 charge is added on January 1, 2027. Plates and postage are an estimate. The DMV's fee estimator gives the exact figure for your car.
