Wisconsin car sales tax: rate, sourcing and what it applies to
How the Wisconsin rate is set
- Wisconsin's rate is not a single statewide number — it is resolved from the ZIP code you register in, because local jurisdictions add to the state rate. Across Wisconsin the combined rate runs 5% to 7.9%, so where you register genuinely changes what you owe.
- The rate that matters is the one where you register the vehicle, not where the dealership sits. Buying out of your area does not change what you owe.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: the dealer doc fee, dealer-installed accessories and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Wisconsin
- Wisconsin charges 5% state tax plus a 0.5% county tax in most counties, based on where you keep the car — your home, not the dealership. Milwaukee County is 0.9%, and the City of Milwaukee adds 2% on top, for 7.9% in all. Waukesha and Winnebago counties have no county tax.
- If your ZIP code straddles a county line or the City of Milwaukee's limits, you'll be offered more than one rate to choose from.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount. Manufacturer rebates do not — Wisconsin taxes the price before the rebate, so you pay tax on money you never keep. A discount the dealer gives you does reduce it.
- The doc fee (Wisconsin calls it a service fee) has no dollar cap, only a requirement that it be reasonable and disclosed before the sale. It is taxed. A dealer that leaves it out of an advertised price has to say so clearly in the ad.
- Extended warranties and service contracts are taxed in Wisconsin. GAP coverage is not, as long as it is listed separately. This calculator taxes all finance-office products together, so if yours is mostly GAP the tax shown runs slightly high.
- Many counties and cities add an annual wheel tax of $10 to $50, and some places charge both — in the City of Milwaukee it comes to $71 a year. City wheel taxes follow city limits, which ZIP codes don't, so treat that line as an estimate.
- If you are transferring plates from a car you are replacing, you skip the registration fee, the plate fee and the wheel tax.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in Wisconsin?
It varies by where you register — the state rate plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for the exact combined rate.
Is the doc fee taxed in Wisconsin?
Yes. The doc fee is added to the price before tax is calculated, so it costs you slightly more than its face value.
