What comes later

Registration renews every two years: the $100 state fee plus your city or borough's vehicle tax, if you have one. The DMV mails a notice. The vehicle tax drops as the car gets older.
Alaska has no emissions test for registration. The Anchorage and Fairbanks programs were suspended in 2012 and 2010.
Alaska charges no extra registration fee for electric or hybrid cars.
Where your city or borough charges the municipal vehicle tax, it takes the place of any local property tax or use tax on the car. Alaska has no state tax on the ownership of a car.

What's specific to Alaska

Registering the car: an Alaska dealer usually sends your title and registration application to the DMV for you, within 30 days of the sale. The dealer can issue a temporary permit good for up to 60 days, and the state charges nothing for it. The calculator includes the title, registration and vehicle tax because you pay them either way, at the dealer or at the DMV.
A used car keeps its registration when it changes hands. If the registration is current, the calculator shows only the title fee and, if you finance, the lien fee. If it has expired, the DMV charges the full two years starting from the month it expired.
