Alaska car sales tax: rate, sourcing and what it applies to
How the Alaska rate is set
- Alaska's rate is not a single statewide number — it is resolved from the ZIP code you register in, because local jurisdictions add to the state rate. Across Alaska the combined rate runs 0% to 7.85%, so where you register genuinely changes what you owe.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: the dealer doc fee, dealer-installed accessories and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in does NOT come off — Alaska taxes the full price even when you trade a car in.
What's specific to Alaska
- Registering the car: an Alaska dealer usually sends your title and registration application to the DMV for you, within 30 days of the sale. The dealer can issue a temporary permit good for up to 60 days, and the state charges nothing for it. The calculator includes the title, registration and vehicle tax because you pay them either way, at the dealer or at the DMV.
- Alaska has no state sales tax. Some cities and boroughs charge their own, and a few of them tax a car only up to a limit: Kenai Peninsula tax applies to the first $500 of the price, Wasilla to the first $500, Juneau to the first $15,000 on a car priced $50,000 or less. Anchorage and Fairbanks charge no sales tax at all.
- The tax is set by the town where the dealer is, not where you live. The calculator uses the ZIP code you entered, which is right when you buy near home. If you buy in a town with a tax from a ZIP code without one, or the reverse, the calculator will not match the contract.
- Several Southeast towns change their rate by season: Sitka, Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines, Craig and Seldovia charge more from April through September. The rate shown is the one in force today.
- The doc fee has no dollar cap in Alaska, and Alaska law requires it to be in the advertised price. Where a local sales tax applies, the doc fee is part of the price that is taxed.
- A trade-in does not lower the sales tax in most places. The Ketchikan Gateway Borough is the exception: it exempts the trade-in value. The calculator does not apply that yet, which makes no difference unless the price minus the trade-in is under $2,000.
- A manufacturer rebate is taxed the same as the price it comes off. A discount from the dealer's own price lowers the taxable amount.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in Alaska?
It varies by where you register — the state rate plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for the exact combined rate.
Is the doc fee taxed in Alaska?
Yes. The doc fee is added to the price before tax is calculated, so it costs you slightly more than its face value.
