Mississippi car registration and title fees
What the dealer collects in Mississippi
- Title fee — $9.00. Certificate of title, issued by the Department of Revenue. The dealer files the title application. The fee is the same if your lender is recorded on the title. (DOR Motor Vehicle Titles page (2026))
- Registration and tag fee — $14.00. A new plate and two decals from your county tax collector: $5 for the tag, $5 additional registration fee and $4 for the state trauma care fund. A renewal costs $12.75. Your old plate does not move to the new car. (Miss. Code 27-19-43(3); DOR Motor Vehicle FAQs)
- Road and bridge privilege tax — $15.00. The annual highway privilege tax on a car, SUV or van, paid for twelve months when you tag the car. (Miss. Code 27-19-5, 27-19-63(1))
- Road and bridge privilege tax (pickup) — $7.20. A pickup pays the highway privilege tax by gross weight: $7.20 up to 6,000 pounds and $25.20 from 6,001 to 10,000. The state counts the empty weight plus the load, so this shows the lowest bracket. Your county tax collector knows your bracket. (Miss. Code 27-19-11(1), 27-19-3(29))
- Electric vehicle annual tax (at least) — $150.00. An annual tax on an electric car, collected with the tag. It started at $150 and rises each July 1 with inflation, so the amount due now is higher than $150. Ask your county tax collector for the current figure. (Miss. Code 27-19-21(2)(a)-(b))
- Hybrid annual tax (at least) — $75.00. An annual tax on a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, collected with the tag. It started at $75 and rises each July 1 with inflation, so the amount due now is higher than $75. Ask your county tax collector for the current figure. (Miss. Code 27-19-23(2)(a)-(b))
- County vehicle property tax (estimate) — varies. Mississippi taxes the car as property and collects the tax when you buy the tag. It is 30% of the car's value from the state's schedule (original MSRP less depreciation) times your local millage, less the state's legislative tag credit. This estimate uses the statewide median millage (119.3) and the 6.5% credit. Your bill depends on your city, school district and county and can be a third of this or double it. Used cars are estimated from the price you entered; enter the original MSRP for a closer figure. (DOR Motor Vehicle Ad Valorem Taxes page; Miss. Code 27-51-103; State Auditor, Car Tag Prices Across Mississippi (Jan 2026))
- County vehicle property tax (estimate) — $5.43. A car 10 or more model years old is valued at $100, the state's minimum, so the county tax is small. (State Auditor, Car Tag Prices Across Mississippi (Jan 2026), Figure 2 and note 8)
What comes later
- Mississippi's county vehicle property tax comes back every year with your tag renewal. It is 30% of the car's state-assessed value times your local millage, less the legislative tag credit (6.5% of the assessed value in 2025). The state's value drops each year: 90% of MSRP in the first model year, 77%, 64%, 50%, 40%, 30% and on down to $100 at ten years old. The same car can cost very different amounts to tag in different towns.
- Renewal each year costs the $15 privilege tax and $12.75 registration fee, plus the county property tax. The sticker month is the month you first tagged the car.
- Mississippi does not let you move plates from another car. The tag belongs to the car and its owner. If you turn in the old plate, the unused part of its registration can be credited toward the new car's tag.
- You have 30 business days from the purchase date to tag the car at your county tax collector. Late fees start at 5% and rise by 5% each 30 days to 25%, and at 25% you lose the legislative tag credit.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
- The electric vehicle annual tax comes back with every tag renewal and rises each July 1 with the consumer price index.
- The hybrid annual tax comes back with every tag renewal and rises each July 1 with the consumer price index.
What's specific to Mississippi
- The dealer files your title application. You then take the copy to your county tax collector within 30 business days to pay for the tag. The tag fee, privilege tax and county property tax are paid there, not to the dealer.
- The county property tax is the large Mississippi ownership cost: often several hundred dollars on a new car and more in some cities. The figure here is an estimate from the statewide median rate; your tag office has your exact amount.
- A dealer can issue a drive-out tag good for seven working days (its cost to the dealer is $5) to a buyer who is leaving the state before tagging. Most in-state buyers go straight to their county tax collector, so it is not in the total.
