New Jersey car registration and title fees
What the dealer collects in New Jersey
- Registration fee — varies. New Jersey's passenger registration fee is weight-tiered: $59/yr at or under 3,500 lbs, $84/yr over 3,500 lbs (a newer-vehicle rate; older vehicles pay a lower band). Without a specific curb weight this defaults to a typical modern crossover weight. (N.J.S.A. 39:3-8)
- Title fee — $60.00. Certificate of ownership, unencumbered — $60 (N.J.S.A. 39:10-11A). (NJ MVC fee table)
- Title fee (with lien) — $85.00. Certificate of ownership with one lien recorded — $85 (a second lien would be $110; not modeled here). (NJ MVC fee table)
- ZEV registration surcharge — $270.00. Annual fee for zero-emission vehicles, $270 for the 2026 period (scheduled: $250 in 2024 rising $10/yr to $290 by 2028) — on top of the standard registration fee above. (N.J.S.A. 39:3-8.5; NJ MVC)
Electric and hybrid vehicles
- The ZEV registration surcharge recurs every year and is scheduled to keep rising $10/yr through 2028 ($270 in 2026, $280 in 2027, $290 in 2028).
What's specific to New Jersey
- New Jersey no longer exempts electric vehicles from sales tax — that exemption fully phased out July 1, 2025. EVs do pay a separate annual registration surcharge ($270 for 2026, rising through 2028).
