Wyoming car registration and title fees
What the dealer collects in Wyoming
- County registration fee (by value) — varies. Wyoming's county registration fee follows the car's value, not its weight: 3% of a share of the manufacturer's suggested retail price, 60% in the first year of service, then 50%, 40%, 30%, 20% and 15% from the sixth year on. A car of the current model year counts as first year whatever the purchase date. Enter the MSRP; without it we use the price you pay, which understates the fee on a used car. Minimum $5. It is paid to your county treasurer and is charged in place of an annual property tax on the car. (W.S. 31-3-101(a)(i), (d); 31-1-101(a)(v); 31-2-214(a)(i))
- State registration fee — $30.00. $30 a year for a passenger car, which Wyoming defines as a vehicle that carries 10 people or fewer and is used mainly to carry people. We treat SUVs and crossovers the same way. (W.S. 31-3-101(a)(ii)(A); 31-1-101(a)(xv)(F))
- State registration fee (pickup or light truck, by weight) — varies. A noncommercial truck pays a state fee by the maker's published weight: $30 from 1,001 to 3,500 lbs, $40 to 4,500, $50 to 5,500, $70 to 6,000 and $90 above that. Enter the curb weight to get your bracket; without it we assume 4,501 to 5,500 lbs. (W.S. 31-3-101(a)(ii)(E); 31-1-101(a)(xv)(J), (P))
- Electric vehicle decal — $100.00. An annual $100 decal on all-electric cars, charged with registration. It was $200 until July 1, 2026. (W.S. 31-3-102(a)(xxiii), as amended by 2026 Wyo. Sess. Laws ch. 92 (HB0145), eff. 2026-07-01)
- Plug-in hybrid decal — $50.00. An annual $50 decal on plug-in hybrids, charged with registration. Hybrids that do not plug in pay nothing extra. (W.S. 31-3-102(a)(xxiv), as amended by 2026 Wyo. Sess. Laws ch. 92 (HB0145), eff. 2026-07-01)
- Title fee — $15.00. Certificate of title, paid to your county clerk. The dealer sends the paperwork to the clerk of the county where you live. (W.S. 31-3-102(a)(vii); Laramie County Clerk fee schedule)
- Lien filing fee — $20.00. The county clerk's fee to record your lender's lien on the title: $20 on the county clerk fee schedule. An electronic lien and title vendor may add its own transaction fee. (W.S. 18-3-402(a)(xvi)(T); W.S. 31-2-113(c); Laramie County Clerk fee schedule)
What comes later
- Registration renews every year. The county fee falls each year as the car moves down the schedule (60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, then 15% of the MSRP, times 3%). The $30 state fee stays the same. Wyoming's registration fee is charged in place of an annual property tax on the car, so there is no separate property tax bill.
- You have 65 days from the purchase to pay the sales tax to your county treasurer. After that, interest runs at 1% a month, plus a $25 civil fee from day 65 and the greater of $25 or 10% of the tax from day 75.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
- The electric or plug-in hybrid decal renews every year with registration. Since July 1, 2026, electricity sold at a DC fast-charging station also carries a state license tax of 3.5 cents a kWh, built into the price at the charger.
What's specific to Wyoming
- You do not pay the sales tax to the dealer. Your county treasurer collects it when you first register the car, and the dealer sends your title paperwork to your county clerk. You have 65 days from the purchase to pay. The tax is in the calculator's total because you pay it either way.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount, on new and used cars. The trade has to be titled in your name. A manufacturer's rebate also reduces it when it is applied at the sale and assigned to the dealer, but a rebate you receive by mail afterwards does not. A dealer's own discount reduces it too.
- Registration is by value: 3% of 60% of the car's MSRP in the first year, so about $720 on a $40,000 new car, plus a $30 state fee and the $15 title fee. The county fee on an older car falls to as little as 0.45% of its original MSRP. Enter the MSRP; without it the calculator uses the price you pay, which understates the fee on a used car.
- A dealer can issue a 60-day temporary permit so you can drive while you register. You register at your county treasurer's office, not at the dealer.
