Wyoming car sales tax: rate, sourcing and what it applies to
How the Wyoming rate is set
- Wyoming's rate is not a single statewide number — it is resolved from the ZIP code you register in, because local jurisdictions add to the state rate. Across Wyoming the combined rate runs 4% to 9%, so where you register genuinely changes what you owe.
- The rate that matters is the one where you register the vehicle, not where the dealership sits. Buying out of your area does not change what you owe.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: the dealer doc fee and dealer-installed accessories.
- Not part of the taxable amount: extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Wyoming
- Wyoming charges a 4% state sales tax on a car, plus the county's option taxes where you live, not where the dealer is. The county total runs from 4% to 7% (Park and Sublette 4%, Teton 7%), and 9% inside the Teton Village and Grand Targhee resort districts. This uses the Department of Revenue's chart effective October 1, 2026.
- You do not pay the sales tax to the dealer. Your county treasurer collects it when you first register the car, and the dealer sends your title paperwork to your county clerk. You have 65 days from the purchase to pay. The tax is in the calculator's total because you pay it either way.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount, on new and used cars. The trade has to be titled in your name. A manufacturer's rebate also reduces it when it is applied at the sale and assigned to the dealer, but a rebate you receive by mail afterwards does not. A dealer's own discount reduces it too.
- The doc fee is taxed, and so are freight, dealer preparation and accessories the dealer installs. An extended warranty or service contract is not taxed when it is listed as its own line on the contract.
- Registration is by value: 3% of 60% of the car's MSRP in the first year, so about $720 on a $40,000 new car, plus a $30 state fee and the $15 title fee. The county fee on an older car falls to as little as 0.45% of its original MSRP. Enter the MSRP; without it the calculator uses the price you pay, which understates the fee on a used car.
- A dealer can issue a 60-day temporary permit so you can drive while you register. You register at your county treasurer's office, not at the dealer.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in Wyoming?
It varies by where you register — the state rate plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for the exact combined rate.
Is the doc fee taxed in Wyoming?
Yes. The doc fee is added to the price before tax is calculated, so it costs you slightly more than its face value.
