Georgia car registration and title fees
What the dealer collects in Georgia
- Title fee — $18.00. Certificate of title, filed by the dealer on your behalf. If you finance, recording the lienholder is covered by this same fee u2014 Georgia has no separate lien charge. (O.C.G.A. Sec. 40-2-151; GA DOR fee schedule)
- Lemon Law fee — $3.00. A $3 state fee collected by every Georgia dealer on a new vehicle sale. The dealer keeps $1 and remits $2 to the Department of Law. (O.C.G.A. Sec. 10-1-791(a))
What comes later
- Georgia plates are usually NOT handled by the dealer u2014 the Department of Revenue says dealers are not required to submit your registration, though some do as a courtesy. Budget $20 for a year's tag at your county tag office, and register within 30 days of purchase. On a new car you may instead elect a two-year initial registration for $40.
- Georgia's TAVT replaces both sales tax and the old annual 'birthday tax,' so there is no recurring vehicle property tax to plan for.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
- Battery-electric vehicles pay Georgia's alternative-fuel vehicle fee, $238.59 per year for a non-commercial vehicle in the year beginning July 1, 2026. It is recalculated every July 1 under a fuel-efficiency and inflation formula, so expect it to drift upward.
- Plug-in hybrids only pay Georgia's alternative-fuel vehicle fee if you choose an alternative-fuel license plate. By default there is no fee.
What's specific to Georgia
- Georgia charges a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax u2014 7% statewide, with no county or city variation. It replaces both the sales tax and the old annual ad valorem tax.
- Your license plate is not included in the total above. Georgia dealers must handle the title and the tax, but they are not required to register the car for you.
