Georgia car sales tax: 7% and what it applies to
How the Georgia rate is set
- Georgia charges 7%, and that rate is the same everywhere in the state — no county or city adds to it on a vehicle purchase.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: the dealer doc fee and dealer-installed accessories.
- Not part of the taxable amount: extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Georgia
- Georgia charges a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax u2014 7% statewide, with no county or city variation. It replaces both the sales tax and the old annual ad valorem tax.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount with no dollar cap, on both new and used purchases. The trade-in owner's name and VIN have to appear on the bill of sale for the credit to count.
- A manufacturer rebate reduces the taxable amount on a NEW vehicle only. On a used purchase from a dealer, Georgia does not subtract the rebate.
- Extended warranties and service contracts are not taxed as long as they are itemized separately on the dealer's invoice. If they are rolled into the price without itemization, they become taxable.
- Georgia requires the doc fee to be built into the advertised price u2014 a dealer advertising a price 'plus' a doc fee is treated as deceptive advertising by the Attorney General. The fee itself is not capped, and it is part of the taxable amount.
- Your license plate is not included in the total above. Georgia dealers must handle the title and the tax, but they are not required to register the car for you.
