Oklahoma › Doc fee
Oklahoma doc fees: no cap, and what buyers actually pay
What Oklahoma allows
- Oklahoma does not cap the doc fee. Dealers set it themselves, and there is no legal ceiling to point at.
- Buyers here commonly report around $549.00. That is a market figure drawn from reported deals, not a government number — treat it as a reference point for what is normal, not as a limit.
- The rule: OAC 465:15-1-2 & 465:15-3-7 (new-dealer "dealer-added fee"); OAC 765:16-3-6 (used-dealer "processing fee") — disclosure/inclusion rules only, no dollar cap.
Is it taxed, and is it negotiable?
- The doc fee is NOT taxed in Oklahoma — you pay the fee, but no tax on top of it.
- With no cap in play, the doc fee is simply part of the total you are negotiating. What matters is the out-the-door number, not which line the money sits on.
- The high end of what buyers report here is around $599.00 — above that you are an outlier, which is worth saying out loud at the desk.
What's specific to Oklahoma
- The doc fee is not part of the excise tax. The state's rule leaves out fees for a service the seller provides, naming the documentary fee, plus financing, insurance and maintenance-agreement charges. Equipment and accessories fixed to the car are part of it. We found no rule that subtracts a manufacturer rebate, so none is applied.
- Oklahoma does not cap the doc fee. For a new car the state requires it to be in the advertised price. For a used car the state's rule lets a dealer leave a processing fee out, and the FTC expects it in.
