Oklahoma car registration and title fees
What the dealer collects in Oklahoma
- Title fee — $11.00. Certificate of title, issued by Service Oklahoma. You pay it at the tag agency when you register the car. If you finance, the title goes to your lender. (47 O.S. 1105(H); Service Oklahoma fees page)
- Registration (first year, new car) — $96.00. One year of registration with a new metal plate. Oklahoma sets the fee by the car's registration year: $96 for years 1 to 4, $86 for years 5 to 8, $66 for years 9 to 12, $46 for years 13 to 16 and $26 from year 17. You can pay for two years at once, which doubles it. (47 O.S. 1132(A); Service Oklahoma fees page)
- Registration (by vehicle age) — varies. One year of registration with a plate. The fee drops as the car ages: $96 in years 1 to 4, $86 in years 5 to 8, $66 in years 9 to 12, $46 in years 13 to 16 and $26 from year 17. The state counts years from the date the car was first sold, which this estimates from the model year. (47 O.S. 1132(A); OAC 710:60-3-11 (rules transferred to Service Oklahoma 2022-05-19); Service Oklahoma fees page)
- Transfer fee — $17.00. A fee for the change of ownership, paid at the tag agency. The statute sets $15; Service Oklahoma's fee page lists $17. (47 O.S. 1132(E); Service Oklahoma fees page)
- Transfer fee — $17.00. A fee for the change of ownership, paid at the tag agency. The statute sets $15 on every transfer; Service Oklahoma's fee page lists $17 among the initial registration fees. We have not confirmed that a new car's first sale pays it. (47 O.S. 1132(E); Service Oklahoma fees page)
- Insurance verification fee — $1.50. The tag agency charges this each time it issues a registration and checks your insurance. A two-year registration pays it twice. (47 O.S. 7-602(B); Service Oklahoma fees page)
- Used tire recycling fee — varies. $2.90 for each tire on a car the first time it is registered in Oklahoma. The bill of sale lists the number of tires. A used car already registered in Oklahoma does not pay it again. (27A O.S. 2-11-401.2(A)(1)(b); 47 O.S. 2104(B); DEQ tire recycling fee sheet)
- Electric vehicle registration fee — varies. A yearly fee on top of registration for a battery electric car, set by gross weight: $110 under 6,000 pounds, $158 from 6,000 to 10,000 pounds. Most passenger EVs fall in the first class. (68 O.S. 6511 (2021 HB 2234, sec. 11))
- Plug-in hybrid registration fee — varies. A yearly fee on top of registration for a plug-in hybrid, set by gross weight: $82 under 6,000 pounds, $118 from 6,000 to 10,000 pounds. A hybrid without a plug does not pay it. (68 O.S. 6511 (2021 HB 2234, sec. 11))
- Lien recording fee — $10.00. Recording your lender's lien on the title. The law puts the $10 fee on the lender, which usually passes it through at the tag agency or in your contract. (47 O.S. 1110(A)(3)(a))
What comes later
- Oklahoma charges no yearly property tax on a car. The registration fee takes its place, and it falls as the car ages. There is no yearly excise tax, only the one at purchase.
- Registration renews every year on the anniversary of your first registration, or every two years if you pay both at once. The fee steps down with the car's age: $96 in years 1 to 4, $86 in years 5 to 8, $66 in years 9 to 12, $46 in years 13 to 16 and $26 from year 17, plus the $1.50 insurance verification fee each time.
- You have two months from the purchase to register the car. A late registration costs $1 a day, up to $100. The excise tax is late after 30 days: $1 a day, up to the amount of the tax. The sales tax carries interest after 30 days and a penalty after 45 days.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
- The electric vehicle fee comes back with every yearly registration renewal. It is $110 for a car under 6,000 pounds gross weight and $158 from 6,000 to 10,000 pounds.
- The plug-in hybrid fee comes back with every yearly registration renewal. It is $82 for a car under 6,000 pounds gross weight and $118 from 6,000 to 10,000 pounds.
What's specific to Oklahoma
- Oklahoma has no sales tax on a car in the usual sense. It charges a 3.25% motor vehicle excise tax and a 1.25% motor vehicle sales tax, 4.5% together, and you pay both at the tag agency when you register, not to the dealer. No city or county adds a vehicle tax, so the rate is the same in every ZIP.
- Registering the car: the dealer cannot do it for you. Oklahoma bars a dealer from procuring your registration or acting as your agent. The dealer puts a temporary plate on the car and sends your information to the state within two business days. You get your metal plate and pre-registration decals by mail within 10 days, then you have two months to title and register at a tag agency (a licensed operator), where you pay the taxes and fees in this total. Starting January 1, 2027 the dealer issues a 60-day temporary plate instead.
- Pay the excise tax within 30 days, even though the registration deadline is two months. The tax is late after day 30.
- Registration is $96 for a car in its first four years and falls to $26 after 16. The $96 here is for a new car, or a used car 3 model years old or newer. Commercial trucks register under a weight schedule this calculator does not cover.
