Oklahoma car sales tax: 4.5% and what it applies to
How the Oklahoma rate is set
- Oklahoma charges 4.5%, and that rate is the same everywhere in the state — no county or city adds to it on a vehicle purchase.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: dealer-installed accessories.
- Not part of the taxable amount: the dealer doc fee and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Oklahoma
- Oklahoma has no sales tax on a car in the usual sense. It charges a 3.25% motor vehicle excise tax and a 1.25% motor vehicle sales tax, 4.5% together, and you pay both at the tag agency when you register, not to the dealer. No city or county adds a vehicle tax, so the rate is the same in every ZIP.
- Your trade-in lowers the 1.25% sales tax, which is figured on the price less the trade. It does not lower the 3.25% excise tax, which is figured on the full price. The calculator shows each tax on its own line, with the trade-in taken off only the 1.25% tax.
- On a used car the excise tax is $20 on the first $1,500 of the price plus 3.25% of the rest, which is $28.75 less than 3.25% of the whole price. This calculator does not apply that yet, so a used-car tax can read $28.75 too high.
- The doc fee is not part of the excise tax. The state's rule leaves out fees for a service the seller provides, naming the documentary fee, plus financing, insurance and maintenance-agreement charges. Equipment and accessories fixed to the car are part of it. We found no rule that subtracts a manufacturer rebate, so none is applied.
- Registering the car: the dealer cannot do it for you. Oklahoma bars a dealer from procuring your registration or acting as your agent. The dealer puts a temporary plate on the car and sends your information to the state within two business days. You get your metal plate and pre-registration decals by mail within 10 days, then you have two months to title and register at a tag agency (a licensed operator), where you pay the taxes and fees in this total. Starting January 1, 2027 the dealer issues a 60-day temporary plate instead.
- Pay the excise tax within 30 days, even though the registration deadline is two months. The tax is late after day 30.
