Washington car sales tax: rate, sourcing and what it applies to
How the Washington rate is set
- Washington's rate is not a single statewide number — it is resolved from the ZIP code you register in, because local jurisdictions add to the state rate. Across Washington the combined rate runs 9% to 10.35%, so where you register genuinely changes what you owe.
- Unusually, the rate here follows the DEALERSHIP's location rather than yours. Two dealers in different towns can quote different tax on the same car.
What sits inside the taxable amount
- Taxed on top of the vehicle price: dealer-installed accessories.
- Not part of the taxable amount: the dealer doc fee and extended warranties and service contracts.
- Your trade-in comes off before tax is calculated.
What's specific to Washington
- Washington adds a 0.5% motor vehicle sales/lease tax ON TOP of your local combined retail rate — a line most generic calculators miss. It rose from 0.3% to 0.5% on January 1, 2026.
- Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Washington.
- The doc fee itself is NOT subject to Washington sales tax — WA DOR treats it as a dealer service charge (B&O tax on the dealer's side), not part of the taxable sale.
- Washington charges the rate where the DEALERSHIP is, not where you live — vehicles are one of the few things the state sources to the seller's location. If you buy outside your own area the rate you actually pay is the dealer's, so treat this as the rate for a purchase made near you.

Common questions
What is the car sales tax rate in Washington?
It varies by where you register — the state rate plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for the exact combined rate.
Is the doc fee taxed in Washington?
No. Washington excludes the doc fee from the taxable amount, so you pay the fee but not tax on it.
